Review Revised Design: S Pettigrew Street
Review Revised Design: S Pettigrew Street
Welcome back! We have heard feedback from your neighborhood on the proposed safety improvement to S Pettigrew Street. We are excited to share the revised design. All feedback was taken into consideration while also using best practices to make sure we provide the safest option for your neighborhood. Please review the final design by 5 PM on October 23.
Why this project?
The City has identified S Pettigrew Street for a traffic calming project, which will improve safety for those driving, walking, and biking in your neighborhood. Our goal is safer streets for all! Your street was identified because:
- There have been three speed-related crashes in the last three year.
- Typical driving speeds are 29 MPH (Speed limit is 25 MPH).
We have already shared education materials with neighbors and had one open comment period on proposed safety improvement.
Design
City staff are recommending speed hump and a neighborhood traffic circle to slow speeding on S Pettigrew Street. These devices would be placed every 500 feet along S Pettigrew Street from Pettis Place to New Bern Avenue.
Below is a summary of the feedback gathered when the neighborhood was asked to react to the proposed design.
What We Heard from the Community
- There were neighborhood conversations about street racing and a desire to use Speed Humps as the device preferred to slow drivers down and to stop that type of driver behavior.
- Staff is recommending Speed Humps be used for this street based on the neighborhood feedback.
- There was general neighborhood support for the neighborhood traffic circle proposed but comments that it should be more like the ones along Bart St and not along E Martin St.
- Staff is recommending this device remain after reviewing and identifying 1 intersection crash in the previous 12 months and hearing from residents about stop sign running. The sizing will be similar to Bart St as opposed to E Martin St. E Martin St was sized due to it being a transit route and that is not a design constraint for S Pettigrew St.
- There were neighborhood comments about sidewalks in the area.
- Traffic calming projects stay focused on slowing drivers down and reducing/eliminating speed related crashes with projects that remain completely within the existing street's footprint. Sidewalks are outside the scope of this project. To learn more about sidewalks, please email us at ActiveMobility@raleighnc.gov.
