Review Revised Design: Trailwood Hills Drive

Review Revised Design: Trailwood Hills Drive

Welcome back! We have heard feedback from your neighborhood on the proposed safety improvement to Trailwood Hills Drive. We are excited to share the revised design. All feedback was taken into consideration while also using best practices to make sure we provide the safest option for your neighborhood. Please review the final design by 5 PM on November 6.

Why this project?

The City has identified Trailwood Hills Drive for a traffic calming project, which will improve safety for those driving, walking, and biking in your neighborhood. Our goal is safer streets for all! Your street was identified because:

  • There has been one speed-related crash in the last three years.
  • Typical driving speeds are 32 MPH (Speed limit is 25 MPH).

We have already shared education materials with neighbors and had one open comment period on proposed safety improvement.

Design

City staff are recommending speed cushions to slow speeding on Trailwood Hills Drive. These devices would be placed every 500 feet along Trailwood Hills Drive from Tryon Road to Lineberry Drive.

Below is a summary of the feedback gathered when the neighborhood was asked to react to the proposed design.

Shared Community Comments

  1. Speeding and driving behavior concerns
  2. Safety issues for children and pedestrians
  3. Bus traffic and street narrowness

  4. On-street parking and visibility obstructions

What We Heard from the Community

Install Speed Humps Or Speed Cushions?

  • With feedback from the neighborhood, Speed cushions were selected to not impact emergency services, while still encouraging appropriate speeds

What About Emergency Vehicle Delays?

  • Speed cushions were selected specifically to eliminate/minimize impact on emergency response, while still addressing unsafe travel speeds.

Can drivers cut through the gaps of speed cushions?

  • Speed cushions are designed so that standard passenger vehicles cannot avoid them.
  • Wide‑axle emergency vehicles can straddle the cushion.
  • Cars, SUVs, and pickups do not have wide enough wheelbases to avoid the raised portions entirely.

How to resolve parking and visibility concerns?

  • If you have concerns about on-street parking or visibility issues, City staff can review specific locations outside of this traffic calming proposal for the most timely response and work to correct identified safety issues at the earliest timeline. Please email details and the location of concern to raleighparking@raleighnc.gov, and parking staff will be happy to assist and evaluate the situation.

What about the transit routes?

  • Trailwood Hills Drive serves two bus routes that connect residents to surrounding neighborhoods and the Avent Ferry and Carolina Pines transit routes.
  • These routes serve existing transit riders, with ridership recorded daily at multiple stops along the corridor.
  • Public transportation is an important mobility option for residents, and traffic calming is intended to support safer travel for all roadway users, including transit riders, pedestrians, and motorists.
