Thank you for participating in Survey 2 for the Chavis-Dix Strollway. The Strollway is a 1.3-mile cultural trail connecting John Chavis Memorial Park and Dix Park along the southern edge of downtown Raleigh. Building on the South Park Heritage Trail, the Strollway will feature interpretive elements that bring to life the people and places that shaped this area, making it a way to explore and celebrate Raleigh’s history. Your input will directly inform identification of top priorities for implementing in the initial segment of the Strollway.
The project is currently supported by $1.5 million in federal funding to develop a full concept plan for the entire length of the trail, informed by community input, while identifying a small segment for initial construction. Full implementation of the concept will require additional funding.
This survey is open August 20-September 3 and takes 10-15 minutes to complete. Personal information will not be shared in any summaries or reports without permission.

Storytelling Themes
These questions explore what matters most to you in the storytelling experience of the Strollway.
The Strollway’s storytelling themes were identified through input from the first public engagement window, oral histories, and archival research documenting more than 600 historic resources along the route – approximately 67 civic and institutional sites, 399 commercial businesses, and 214 home-based businesses – many of which no longer exist today.
All 10 themes are important to the overall Strollway story. For the initial Phase 1 segment, please select 5 themes you would most like to see emphasized, recognizing that additional themes may be reflected in future phases.

Refining the Concept Plan
The current concept plan takes the following approach along the Strollway route:
- Directional wayfinding signage at all intersections and midway points.
- Perforated panels at the John Chavis Memorial Park and Dix Park entry/access points, and where the Strollway converges with the South Park Heritage Trail at the intersection of South and Wilmington Streets.
- An information kiosk along the South Street corridor, adjacent to the northern edge of the Heritage Park redevelopment site.
- Information pedestals distributed throughout to identify and provide context for the storytelling themes.
- Concentrations of sidewalk plaques, medallion inlays, and public art west of Dawson Street to interpret and celebrate the history of the Fourth Ward.
