Review Revised Design: Donald Ross Drive
Review Revised Design: Donald Ross Drive
Welcome back! We have heard feedback from your neighborhood on the proposed safety improvement to Donald Ross Drive. We are excited to share the revised design. All feedback was taken into consideration while also using best practices to make sure we provide the safest option for your neighborhood. Please review the final design by 5 PM on November 6.
Why this project?
The City has identified Donald Ross Drive for a traffic calming project, which will improve safety for those driving, walking, and biking in your neighborhood. Our goal is safer streets for all! Your street was identified because:
- There have been two speed-related crashes in the last three year.
- Typical driving speeds are 30 MPH (Speed limit is 25 MPH).
We have already shared education materials with neighbors and had one open comment period on proposed safety improvement.
Design
City staff are recommending speed cushions to slow speeding on Donald Ross Drive. These devices would be placed every 500 feet along Donald Ross Drive from Poole Road to New Bern Avenue.
Below is a summary of the feedback gathered when the neighborhood was asked to react to the proposed design.
What We Heard from the Community
- A concern from the community was that any traffic calming project must allow for fast emergency response access.
- Based on this community input and the community choice, Speed Cushions are being recommended as the device to be installed with this project.
- Residents shared their stories about high driver speeds and crashes that have impacted them along the street.
- This project's core goal is to slow down drivers and to reduce and eliminate future speed related crashes.
- Residents shared that people park and block the existing cycle track along the street.
- Staff will evaluate adding a concrete curb in the buffer space to increase safety for cyclists and to better ensure people do not park in the street. Staff will also look at options to extend the infrastructure so that it ties into New Bern Ave on the north and Poole Rd on the south.
