Review Revised Design: Glendower Road - South

Welcome back! We have heard feedback from your neighborhood on the proposed safety improvement to Glendower Road - South. We are excited to share the revised design. All feedback was taken into consideration while also using best practices to make sure we provide the safest option for your neighborhood. Please review the final design by 5 PM on October 23.

Why this project?

The City has identified Glendower Road - South for a traffic calming project, which will improve safety for those driving, walking, and biking in your neighborhood. Our goal is safer streets for all! Your street was identified because:

  • Typical driving speeds are 39 MPH (Speed limit is 25 MPH).

We have already shared education materials with neighbors and had one open comment period on proposed safety improvement.

City staff are recommending speed cushions to slow speeding on Glendower Road - South. These devices would be placed every 500 feet along Glendower Road - South from Pleasant Grove Church Road to Lynn Road.

Below is a summary of the feedback gathered when the neighborhood was asked to react to the proposed design.

Shared Community Concerns

  1. Safety concerns about speeding
  2. Need for traffic light at Glendower Rd and Lynn Rd
  3. Request for alternative traffic calming solutions
  4. Concerns for wear and tear on vehicles

What We Heard from the Community

  1. Add a traffic light at Glendower Rd and Lynn Rd?

    • A traffic signal is planned and funded by NCDOT and is anticipated to be constructed in 3-5 years.

  2. Increase police enforcement or utilize radar feedback signs to slow drivers?

    • Police enforcement on all residential streets is a near impossible effort for RPD due to the staffing resources required. Traffic calming serves as a permanent enforcement solution that slows vehicles down.

    • Radar feedback signs have been tested and evaluated on 3 pilot streets to determine its effectiveness for traffic calming. They were determined to be ineffective at slowing drivers down long-term and they are not utilized within the program.

    • Staff will request a sign audit where our Signs and Marking group will take inventory of the existing signs and their visibility and make adjustments and additions where needed.

  3. Wear and tear on vehicles from speed humps and cushions?

    • Unlike typical speed bumps found in parking lots, speed humps/cushions are designed to be driven over at the posted speed limit. If a vehicle is not speeding, driving over the device will have minimal impacts.
